Everyday we encounter real life examples of true romance. Being a smaller, more intimate hotel, it’s no wonder guests looking for a truly romantic escape, or simply to reignite that flame, stay with us. We met one couple who are ‘poster adults’ for a deep and enduring commitment. It was this couple who inspired our newest package celebrating all of our unique love stories — What’s Your Love Story? (BTW--all of the photos are guests who have experienced a part of their love story at The Chanler.)
They met in high school English class and an instant affinity was present, even before realizing that they were born on the same day. She told her mother that she had a date Friday night with a boy she’d met in school. When asked where they were going, she replied, “He’s not asked me out yet. But he will.” With that same certainty, she knew they would marry.
They did marry, attended college, and struggled to get by, often bathing at a friend’s apartment because their housing offered no private bath. She studied economics and social work; he landed on the law school track.
There came a point in his law studies at which they could no longer afford tuition. A benefactor offered to furnish the funds, no interest, no strings attached. This pivotal event set them both onto a lifelong path of generous philanthropy, sharing their abundant resources with many others as they became very prosperous.
But not without heaps of tests on the strength of their relationship. After numerous unsuccessful attempts to conceive, they decided to adopt. In a fortuitous 'twist of fate', they were presented with two babies in need of placement. She left her Master’s program in social work to devote herself full-time to the children. He became very busy, and very successful, with career and travel occupying his time.
The next 30 years brought many adventures to the family of four. They could not be more different. She hoards art and office supplies, purses, shoes, and infused cooking oils. He collects hot sauces from around the world, high-tech gadgets, fishing gear, cars, and dogs. She accepts his love for all things outdoors: distance cycling, fishing trips to Argentina, a plethora of conservation-related projects and entrepreneurial adventures. He (begrudgingly) tolerates her proclivity for bringing home stray cats and stray friends. He is rarely inside the house; she is rarely outside. His idea of bliss is a 30-mile bike ride followed by a long hike with the dogs and then some tree trimming. Her afternoon is spent knitting in her cushy chair, cats on her lap, perhaps followed by a walk on the treadmill distracted by cable news. But probably not.
They are just months away from celebrating their 66th birthdays, the birthday they now share with their 7-year-old grandson, who has a home away from home with them. She likes to recount the story of the day they wandered into a Maserati dealership, she fell in love with a shiny black one, and he said, “Ok.” But I know that the sight of her husband and grandson returning home from a day of fishing bearing gifts of stinky buckets fills her heart more.
He still sends her flowers every year to commemorate their first date. We are pretty sure that date did not involve truffle popcorn and a butler-drawn bath in Newport, but we are hoping that the next one does!
