As if winter in Newport didn’t sparkle enough, last year saw the return of a magical mecca for family fun: the Newport Skating Center. We’re delighted to welcome back this downtown outdoor waterfront ice skating rink for 2016-2017. Here’s what you need to know about Newport’s own winter wonderland.
About the Newport Skating Center
There’s ice skating, and then there’s ice skating at the Newport Skating Center. Where else can 150 skaters come together to swizzle, spiral and spin -- or even just shuffle -- against a backdrop of historic colonial charm and sweeping ocean views? Free parking, rentals for adults and children, and on-site skate sharpening round out the reasons why the Newport Skating Center is the perfect destination for winter weather fun.
Safety snow cones mean that even wee ones can get in on the icy action, while a large viewing area offers the perfect vantage point for those who prefer to watch instead. More of a shopper than skater? There’s plenty for you here too thanks to the rink’s prime location in the heart of Newport’s famous downtown shopping district.
And if you’re celebrating a birthday or other special occasion this season, why not think outside the box -- and inside the rink -- by hosting a private party at the Newport Skating Center?
Bring Your Appetite
Because all that fresh air frolicking is guaranteed to make you hungry, the Newport Skating Center is offering up a decidedly unconventional answer to concessions this year. A Fork in the Road, Blackstone Caterers’ new food truck, features a tasty Rhode Island favorite, New England Clam Chowder. Diners can also nosh on classic food truck fare like chili dogs, deep fried oreos, loaded nachos and fries.
But you don’t have to give up on your New Year’s resolution to enjoy an A Fork in the Road feast. The nutrition-packed wintery kale salad is a delicious and healthy alternative....although we do extend our admiration to anyone who can resist the fried mac n cheese bites.
The Newport Skating Center opened on December 9th with a tree lighting ceremony, and will remain open through February 27th. Admission is just $7 for adults and teens; $5 for 55+; and $5 for children aged 3-12. A rotating nightly schedule means that there’s always something new and exciting going on. (And be sure to keep an eye out for free skate nights, family nights, and other deals.)
We can think of no better way to embrace the spirit of the season than with a visit to the Newport Skating Center. Triple toe loops entirely optional!
