What do you get when you plant 1,000,000 daffodils on just 7.7 square miles of land? Visitors to Newport will soon find out thanks to the ambitious beautification plans of local non-profit organization Daffodillion. The current tally? 494,000...and counting. There’s no better time or place to embrace all things daffodil than the third annual Newport Daffodil Days Festival this April 16-24.
Blooming with Activities
Nine daffodil-packed days of deals, dining, doodling, dogs and more! You’ll find all that in historic Newport this April kicking off with the Opening Ceremonies and official daffodil ribbon cutting at Bannister's & Bowen's Wharf this afternoon at 2 p.m. Where else can you join in a daffy conga line or witness a Daffodil King and Queen coronation?
Other Daffy Days must-dos include the 15th annual, “Neighborhoods of Newport House Tour,” which offers exclusive entry to five private homes and ends at the gardens at Bellevue House with a delightful display of antique cars set against a backdrop of the festival’s vibrant guest of honor. Car enthusiasts, meanwhile, won’t want to miss the "Driving Miss Daffodil" Car Rally and Classic Car Display concluding with a garden party, live music, and entrancing “Dances Among the Daffodils” performance by the RI Ballet Theatre.
Spring Fling Fun
Looking to don a little floral-inspired finery of your own while taking in breathtaking views of thousands of daffodils from an unparalleled Cliff Walk perch? Join Daffodillion and the Newport Tree Society for their annual Spring Fling, graciously hosted by one of the world’s most luxurious hotels, The Chanler. Nosh on hors d’oeuvres and enjoy live music while sipping a complimentary glass of wine, beer or a Thomas Tew Daffy Daiquiri or Planterr's Punch.
But be prepared to get your festoon on: Prizes will be awarded for the finest, daffodil-decked hats for both ladies and gentlemen.
From ballet to bike tours, you’ll find plenty to do amongst the daffodils in Newport this month. One last tip? Be sure to purchase a Daffy Pin to get in on plentiful “Daffy Deals” offered by local participating businesses throughout the festival.
