Glitz, glamour and...ghosts? While these three things may not initially seem to go together, they’re a perfect fit in Newport during the month of October. Wondering what wonderful wickedness awaits in the City by the Sea? From family fun to adults-only revelry, there’s no better place to be on Halloween than in Newport.

Darkness Has Never Been So Divine

A twisted treat for locals and visitors alike? The Fortress of Nightmares, at historic Fort Adams on October 13, 14, 20, 21, 27 and 28 from 7:00pm - 10:00pm. This extravaganza of evil comprises three different haunted attractions, including Mayhem3D, which uses high-tech ChromaDepth techniques to let you “walk through” walls; the Tunnels of Terror, an interactive maze suitable only for the most brazen and brave (recommended only for ages 12 and above); and Paranormal360, a state-of-the-art virtual tour of an abandoned infirmary.

On Friday, October 28th, meanwhile, Newport Vineyards will play host to the 2nd Annual Halloween CarnEvil. This premier costume party for the 21-and-over set includes a Creepy Cocktail hour, circus performers, a fortune teller machine (think Big’s Zoltar), appearances by Ami Bruni and Adam Berry of TLC’s Kindred Spirits, and beats by DJ Jay Buff from 92 PRO-FM. Just be sure to dress to impress -- best costume prizes are on the line!

Less Fright, More Delight

For fall-themed fun for everyone, schedule a stop at Trinity Church’s Ninth Annual Pumpkin Patch. Open every day through Halloween, you’ll find tasty homemade goodies, cider, craft vendors and even a picture-in-the-patch. On weekends, they kick it up a notch with live music and hot lunches. Looking for another opportunity to show off your amazing costume? You won’t want to miss the costume parade on Sunday, October 29th at 1pm.

Also appropriate for both the young and young at heart? Rail Explorers’ “Terror on the Tracks." Held Thursdays through Sundays between October 7th and 31st, this unique excursion lets participants experience the railroad in an entirely new way: pedal power! With trained guides on hand to ensure safety, the smooth, flat ride travels along Newport’s spectacular Narragansett Bay and throughout Aquidneck Island. Fireside S’mores and hot chocolate enhance the festive feel of this unforgettable adventure. (Rail explorers seats go fast -- so be sure to book your spot ASAP.)
