Beer, Beer Everywhere and More Than Enough to Drink

The words water and Newport are inextricably intertwined given the city’s scenic coastal location and unique nautical tradition. But another liquid has also made a name for itself in Newport -- one that far bests salt water when it comes to imbibing. We’re talking about beer, and what better time to celebrate the intersection of this beloved beverage and Newport than during the 6th annual Newport Craft Beer Festival this April 28 and 29?

Wondering what to expect during this eagerly awaited event? Plenty of sipping, for starters. But also much, much more. Here’s a closer look.

Newport Storm-Craft Beer-The Chanler

Beer and Newport

Newport boasts a rich brewing history way back before the American Revolution. Today, Newport (and its surrounding areas) is not only home to craft breweries of its own, but also draws brewers from every corner of the country. Brewers from Brooklyn, New York to San Diego, California join in this annual celebration of all things beer.

We can think of no spot more suitable for kicking off the Newport Craft Beer Festival than Newport’s own Newport Storm Brewery. This intimate setting -- located in the historic North End -- will play host to Friday night’s VIB (Very Important Beers, natch) session, where a lucky few will have the chance to sample Newport Storm’s distinctive, hand-crafted brews -- some of which won’t be available for tasting anywhere else all weekend - while chatting with the locals who make them.

The fun picks up again on Saturday at the Lawn of the Great Friends Meeting House, where festival-goers have their choice of two sessions from which to choose: 12-3pm and from 4-7pm.

In addition to the offerings of 30-something breweries spanning from Newport’s own backyard to across the country, there will also be live music, fresh eats from some of the city’s most popular neighborhood joints (Pour Judgement, Boru Noodle Bar, Binge BBQ and Empire Coffee, to name a few), and the good company of your fellow beer-loving citizens.

And because proceeds from the Newport Craft Beer Festival benefit the Rhode Island Brewers Guild & Newport Historical Society, you’ll be sipping for a commendable cause. Just keep in mind that tickets do sell out fast for the 21-and-over event, so grab yours before they’re gone.

Can’t make it to this year’s Newport Craft Beer Festival? You can still sample Newport's bevy of beers by visiting Newport Storm for a tour and tasting. Or, enjoy one of their small batch selections while noshing on an impeccable meal at The Spiced Pear, located on the grounds of The Chanler.
