Wet Paint: A Celebration of Art

The Newport Art Museum’s Wet Paint gives exhilarating new meaning to the phrase, “like watching paint dry.” Drawing together artists and art lovers from all over New England, this weekend-long community art fest is a favorite among visitors and locals alike. The 24th annual Wet Paint will take place on August 12th and 13th. Let’s take a closer look at this marquee event on the Newport scene.

About Wet Paint

Simply put: Wet Paint challenges regional artists to find immediate inspiration amidst the extraordinary environs of Newport.

Participating artists check in to the Newport Art Museum on Saturday morning, where their blank canvasses are stamped. They then disperse to explore the area, capture their favorite subjects and views, and return that afternoon with their completed -- still wet! -- works.

That afternoon, the pieces are installed in the Ilgenfritz Gallery for a Preview Reception and silent bidding. It all comes to an exciting conclusion during a festive live auction under the tents on Sunday -- all accompanied by music, cocktails, and the all-around refined revelry for which Newport is known.

Newport and Art

Given its unparalleled beauty, it’s hardly a surprise that Newport has long been a haute hotspot for artists drawn by its magnificent Gilded Age mansions, stunning Cliff Walk, and captivating coastline. In particular, Wet Paint honors Newport’s plein air tradition…albeit with a timed twist.

And of course, where else but in Newport would you find more than 500 artists of all ilk and age -- last year’s participating artists ranged in age from five months to over 90 years old -- roaming the streets, canvases in hand, in search of the sublime? If you'd love to be roaming along with them,  register as an artist online today or in person on August 12th. Not so artistically inclined? You can still get in on the Wet Paint action -- and maybe even take home a masterpiece of your own -- by registering as a bidder at the event.
