Bourbon & Cigars Tasting at Cara: Are You Ready to Indulge?

Autumn is officially upon us, and with its arrival comes the kick-off event in The Chanler’s annual Fall Tasting Series: Bourbon & Cigars. We can think of no better opportunity to discover this newly-opened entrant to Newport’s world-renowned dining scene than by joining us at this epicurean event. Here’s a closer look at what’s waiting for you at Cara’s first ever tasting series.

Six Courses, Six Bourbons

What’s better than sipping one bourbon? Sampling six -- each accompanied by a perfectly paired and prepared course from Cara’s visionary executive chef, Matt Voskuil, and concluding with a consummate cigar.

The meal will begin with shrimp with sweet corn flan and red pepper paired with an Old Forester 1870 Original Batch. Next up? A crawfish corn chowder partnered with a Woodford Reserve Bourbon and rainbow trout with polenta and an Old Forester Statesman. The fourth and fifth courses comprise duck breast, barley, griddle cake, and smoked apple chutney and pork head, cornbread and chestnut paired with a Woodford Reserve Malt and a Woodford Reserve Double Oaked, respectively. To conclude the meal on a sweet note, guests will nosh on pecan, vanilla and sweet corn ice cream complemented by an Old Forester 1897 Bottled-In-Bond.

Your Gracious Guides for the Evening

Each fine bourbon during our Bourbon & Cigars Tasting will be presented by Don Jean of Brown-Forman, one of the largest American-owned spirit and wine companies with brands sold in more than 160 countries. A Certified Specialist of Spirits (CSS), Don has worked in the beverage industry for 37 years. Currently, he is Brown-Forman’s New England Emerging Brands Manager.

Of course, the bourbons themselves also play a starring role. Old Forester has a near-150-year tradition of producing extraordinary libations beloved by generations of Bourbon aficionados. Woodford Reserve -- home to one of Kentucky’s oldest and smallest distilleries -- is equally hallowed thanks to a rich history dating back to 1812. Today, the iconic distillery still sits in the heart of bourbon country nestled amidst Kentucky’s rolling bluegrass hills and thoroughbred farms. 

Presenting the cigars at the event meanwhile? Todd LaScola, owner of the Havana Cigar Club. The club is a cigar lover’s dream as it has one of the largest humidors in Rhode Island with both a public and members only lounge.
