Summer hasn’t officially started until you’ve participated in a quintessential seasonal rite of passage: Taking in a movie under the stars. And there’s no better place to do so than Newport, courtesy of newportFILM’s newportFILM Outdoors. Here’s a closer look at this popular documentary film series, along with its exciting summer lineup for 2018.
Rooted in a collective belief in the power of documentary film to inspire, motivate, entertain and create change, non-profit documentary film series newportFILM brings to Newport the world’s most established and emerging documentary filmmakers and their award-winning work.
It’s fitting that Newport -- home to one of the country’s oldest, continuously operating art associations -- plays host to this amazing assemblage of talent. Once known as the playground of the rich and famous, Newport boasts a rich legacy of the arts, and continues to enjoy a vibrant arts community across everything from dance and live music to comedy and theater companies.
Taking It Outside
While newportFILM offers year-round film showings and events at some of Newport’s most remarkable landmarks, summer is a particularly special time as the backdrop shifts to the magnificent natural setting of Newport county with breathtaking venues, including The Newport Mansions, Aquidneck Park, Salve Regina, Newport Beach House, St. Michael's Country Day School, Eisenhower House, St. George's School, Newport International Polo Grounds, The Newport Art Museum, and Second Beach.
Given the combination of extraordinary films and astonishing locations, it’s hardly a surprise that newportFILM Outdoors screenings are, in and of themselves, remarkable. For starters, whether you’re a resident of Newport or a traveler visiting, a lifelong lover of documentaries or newcomer to the genre, you’ll find no stronger community spirit than at these al fresco Thursday evening gatherings.
And then there’s the fact that newportFILM Outdoors is about more than just movies. Each evening under the stars becomes a festival in its own right thanks to live music, tantalizing food, interviews with filmmakers and subjects, and more.
Oh, and it's free. (Yes, you read that right.)
