Newport is Pro Tennis' First Stop of the Summer in the U.S.

Where do many of the world’s best tennis players head every year after Wimbledon? Newport and the Dell Technologies Hall of Fame Open, the first stop of the summer swing for professional tennis. But that’s just one of many reasons that make Newport -- home of the International Tennis Hall of Fame (ITHF) -- an ace of a destination for tennis players, spectators, and all-around enthusiasts of the sport. Here’s a closer look at all things tennis in Newport.

A Love Affair: Newport & Tennis

The International Tennis Hall of Fame was first conceptualized by former Newport Casino president Jimmy Van Alen and his wife, Candy, after visiting the National Baseball Hall of Fame. Its goal? To preserve the history of tennis, celebrate its champions, and promote global growth. It was officially recognized by the International Tennis Federation in 1986, and the rest is tennis history.

Indeed, there’s no better spot than Newport when it comes to celebrating the legacy of tennis in the US. Not only were the country’s first tennis games played on the fabled courts of the then-Newport Casino (a seven acre site) more than a century ago, but since that time the now-International Tennis Hall of Fame has played host to almost all of the legends of the sport. The museum contains over 25,000 objects, extensive photographic & audiovisual collections and 243 Hall of Famers.

Excellent Serves on Display

Speaking of legends of the sport, the Dell Technologies Hall of Fame Open offers a terrific opportunity to see some legends-in-the-making. The 28 player draw is now largely set and features a brilliant mix of Newport fan favorites, exciting new players and players with impressive grass court resumes. Some of these players include defending champion Jon Isner, who will be returning to Newport for the first time as a top-10 player. The tournament will also welcome back past singles and doubles champion Nicolas Mahut and 2016 Champion, Ivo Karlovic. Joining the Newport veterans will be a group of dynamic rising stars including Alex de Minaur, Thanasi Kokkinakis (who earlier this year knocked out world No. 1 Rodger Federer at the Miami Open) and 2016 NCAA Champion Mackenzie McDonnald. These players and more will battle it out on the grass courts for the chance to take home the coveted Van Alen Cup at this year's tourney.
